Feb 13, 2015  Quickly and easily create custom ambience beds to fill gaps in dialogue with Ambience Match, available only in RX 4 Advanced. Download your free, 10-day tria. The revolutionary new Dialogue Match, mixing powerhouse Neutron 3 Advanced, and impeccable Stratus 3D and Symphony 3D reverbs join RX 7 Advanced, Insight 2, and RX Loudness Control to bring you the most comprehensive post production software package on earth.

RX 7 provides exceedingly useful tools for post production, and many are easy to implement. But we all have to start somewhere, and for those diving into the post game for the first time, any audio-repairing software can be intimidating. Even for experienced hands, it can be hard to know when to edit dialogue anyway—and how to do it.

What follows are some examples of how I use RX 7 everyday. Read on if you want to see some real-world implementations of this powerful processor.

1. Dialogue Contour for finishing a sentence

While working on a podcast, I was given a transcript of the relevant audio, and a bunch of raw interviews from which to pull quotes. Many of the quotes were finished sentences—statements where the person had clearly finished their thought with a period, full stop, end-of-story cadence.

Or so it appeared in the written transcript. The audio, however, told a different story: the person had more to say, hastily jumping into their next thought. This “next thought” wasn’t germane to the original point at all—hence the cut in the script—but human beings aren’t tidy machines. They don’t speak in the same way as writers write. Run-on-sentences are par for the course.

This can sometimes be frustrating for audio editors, for if a person jumps too quickly between one thought and another, you’re left with a most unnatural edit point. That’s what happened on this podcast. I found myself with sentences that just didn’t end clearly.

The solution

Dialogue Contour came to the rescue many times in this project. Using the module, I was able to close the sentence in a natural way. The operation was simple—I isolated the phrase, clicked in a node at the end of the phrase, and subtly brought the pitch down.

How do you add Keyscape to Omnisphere? Do you only need to move the STEAM folder into the STEAM folder with omnisphere? When you do this does it still let you change the sounds and settings for keyscape or do you only get the sounds? Yeah I put keyscape and omnisphere in the same steam folder. A little update. Module & Plug-in [AudioSuite Only]

Overview

The Ambience Match module lets you match the noise floor of one recording to another recording. For example, you can recreate the ambience of a live set on your ADR tracks.

The module analyzes the noise floor in your recording and creates a snapshot of it, similar to the noise print in the Spectral De-noise module. Then you can use this noise print to synthesize similar noise in another recording.

The Ambience Match algorithm analyzes an audio selection, rejects silence, and then finds the lowest common denominator (the noise that is common across the audio file) and treats that as the ambient profile.

Workflow

Using Ambience Match module in the RX Audio Editor

To train Ambience Match, provide it with a selection of raw noise. If there is no single fragment of raw noise, or you want to save time, selections with speech can be used. The algorithm will intelligently discard speech and only leave noisy parts in the noise print.

To match the ambience between selections:

  1. Open the Ambience Match module in the module list
  2. Make a selection in a file.
  3. Click Learn.
  4. Make another selection.
  5. Adjust the Trim level as desired. The Trim control adjusts the level of synthesized ambience.
  6. Select Output Ambience Only if you want the selection replaced with only the ambience from the first selection.
  7. Click Process.

Note

The Ambience Match module cannot reduce the amount of ambience that already exists in the selection, it can only increase it. To reduce the ambience, use the Spectral De-noise module.

To create an Ambience Match preset:

  1. In Ambience Match, click the gear icon to the right of the preset drop-down menu.
  2. Select Add Preset.
  3. Enter the name for the new preset.
  4. Press Enter.

Using Ambience Match as an AudioSuite Plug-In

In addition to applying Ambience Match inside of the RX Audio Editor, it can also be used as an AudioSuite plug-in inside of Avid’s Pro Tools or Media Composer.

When using Ambience Match inside of Pro Tools or Media Composer, we recommend not learning from audio that contains fades within the selection or the handles. As Ambience Match establishes an ambient profile using the lowest common denominator, learning from audio that’s being faded in may result in inconsistent detection of the noise floor. Handles can be preserved by using Ambience Match in clip-by-clip mode.

Note about learning ambience on fades

When using Pro Tools, you may see an inconsistent result as a result of Pro Tools adding dithering to fades, which varies based on the session’s bit depth. Since this dithering noise almost certainly doesn’t match the material’s noise profile, this will throw off Ambience Match. If you’re running a session in 16 bits, the dither added by a fade will be sufficient enough to affect the detection algorithm. The problem is less pronounced in 24 or 32 bits. To adjust the bit depth of your session, go to Setup > Session in Pro Tools.
