If your Mac goes to sleep unexpectedly

Nov 12, 2016  Teamviewer and UAC prompts. Now, the first time I tried this, it seemed to be working but the client's Teamviewer never restarted with elevated privileges. I just tried it again tonight and it worked, so hopefully this is my answer! Shift-Right-Click the TeamViewer app, choose Run As, put in admin account info. It's good since TeamViewer is not working in Gentoo. Weird flex with the shortcuts but hey. For real work I use tmate to access their protected intranet. 2020-04-05 17:31:23 @laxmin #paytm is now very unusable. It is forcing users to login only with a QR code (no username/password or mobile number/OTP). Oct 01, 2013  ‎TeamViewer provides easy, fast and secure remote access to Windows, Mac and Linux systems. TeamViewer is already used on more than 200,000,000 computers worldwide. You can use this app to: - Control computers remotely as if you were sitting right in front of them.

Make sure that Energy Saver is set up the way you want: choose Apple () menu > System Preferences, then click Energy Saver. Adjust one or more of the following controls to affect when your Mac goes to sleep. Some of these controls might not be available on your Mac.

  • 'Turn display off after' slider
  • 'Display sleep' slider
  • 'Computer sleep' slider
If a slider is set to 'Never,' sleep is disabled for that feature.
  • Schedule button

Make sure that you aren't putting your Mac to sleep accidentally:

  • Pressing the power button can put your Mac to sleep.
  • Moving your mouse pointer to a hot corner can put your Mac to sleep, depending on your Mission Control settings. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Mission Control. Click the Hot Corners button, then see if any of the corners are set to 'Put Display to Sleep.'
  • Using magnets near your Mac notebook can put your Mac to sleep.

If your Mac doesn't go to sleep when you expect

Check your Energy Saver settings as described above, and be aware that your Mac won't automatically go to sleep unless it's inactive:

  • The same network activities that can wake your Mac can also keep your Mac from sleeping.
  • Any app or other process that's running on your Mac could also be keeping your Mac awake. Check the Energy Saver pane of Activity Monitor to identify apps that need your Mac to be awake. If 'Yes' appears in the Preventing Sleep column for an app, your Mac won't automatically sleep while the app is running. Other apps prevent sleep only when doing certain things, such playing music or video, printing, or downloading files.

If you started from macOS Recovery on a Mac notebook, automatic sleep is disabled as long as the Mac is using AC power.

Your Mac might wake for these activities:

  • Network activity that uses the Wake on Demand feature. Examples of network activity include iTunes sharing, photo sharing, printer sharing, file sharing, and using Back to My Mac.*
  • Enhanced notifications from FaceTime, Messages, and other apps and services.
  • Bluetooth activity. To prevent Bluetooth devices from waking your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Bluetooth. Click the Advanced Button, then deselect 'Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer.'

If you have a MacBook Pro (2016 or later) or MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, 2017), note that these models are designed to start up when you open their lids or connect them to power.

*As of July 1, 2019, Back to My Mac service is no longer available.

If your Mac doesn't wake when you expect

Your Mac might pause a few seconds before it wakes up. If it doesn't seem to wake at all, check for these possibilities:

  • Your Mac might be in safe sleep. To wake from safe sleep, press the power button.

If the previous steps don't work

These additional steps may help identify or resolve the issue:

  • Reset the SMC.
  • Reset NVRAM.
  • Disconnect external devices other than your Apple keyboard, mouse, and display. If that resolves the issue, gradually reconnect your devices, testing each time, until you find the device that is interfering with sleep. Then check the documentation that came with the device, or contact the device manufacturer.
  • Start up in Safe Mode to see if the issue is related to non-Apple startup items, login items, or kernel extensions.
  • Try to isolate the issue by using another user account.

If you still see the issue, contact Apple Support.

FaceTime is not available in all countries or regions.

So the other day, I was troubleshooting an issue on my friend's PC using TeamViewer. And much to my annoyance, I realized that there was no sound coming from the other side. If it was an issue that didn't require audio, I would have gladly let it go. But as luck would have it, it was a VLC-related issue for which explicitly needed audio.

In situations such as these, the sound settings are the usual culprits. It can be either related to the individual module (Remote Control or Meeting), or to the program which you are running on the other person's machine.

So, in this post today, we cover both the aspects and show you how to enable audio in TeamViewer on Windows 10 computers.

Audio in Remote Control Sessions

Step 1: Once you have opened Team Viewer, go to the main window and click on Extras > Options.

Step 2: Click on Remote control (third option from the top) and check the 'Play computer sounds and music' option under the Remote control defaults section.

For audio to function normally remote control sessions, the above option needs to stay enabled on both the computers.

However, if you are still facing issues in playing sound from other applications like VLC, a peek into the audio settings of VLC should get it working.

In the VLC, Click on Tools > Preferences and select the Audio tab. Once in, go to the Output section and click on the drop down option menu to set the output module as WaveOut audio output. Select speakers and hit OK.

Audio in Meetings

Thankfully, in TeamViewer Meetings, the audio settings are located right on the meeting interface. Meaning that you don't have to leave the screen to rummage through the settings.

Once you've started a meeting, tap on the Cog icon in the Screen Sharing card. Select Share computer sounds and music. That's it. The participants on the other side will be able to hear the audio almost immediately.

Just be sure to keep the microphone turned off when you are not speaking. Wait, that's not all.

More TeamViewer Tricks

1. Record Sessions Automatically

Did you know that you can record Remote Control sessions automatically? Yep, you read that right. This trick is useful if you often forget to tap on the Record button.

All you have to do is go to Extras > Options > Remote control and check the option for automatic screen recording. This way, you won't have to bother about tapping on the record button every time you start a session.

2. Optimize Speed

If only remote sessions (and video calls) could be as seamless and crystal clear as they show in the movies. Unfortunately, reality and expectations are very much different. A little lag is somewhat acceptable, but it can get quite annoying at times when the cursor seems to move in fits and bursts.

Thankfully, this can be fixed to an extent by optimizing the speed. Click on View and select Optimize speed. Also, if you have a bad or slow connection, a click on Optimize Quality will also help.

3. Set up a Confirmation Box

The default settings of TeamViewer allows full access to your computer when you join a Remote Control session. But if you'd want the tool to ask for your permission (before you give the control), it can also be done.

To do so, you'd need to head over to the Advanced options (Extras > Options) and search for the 'Advanced settings for connection to this computer' card. Under Access control, select Custom settings and click on Configure.

Click on the drop down menu for Control this computer option and select After confirmation. That's it!

4. Reboot like a Pro

If you have to reboot the client machine, we all know that the standard action of tapping on the Restart button will close TeamViewer. And you'd have to reopen the connection to see whether the changes have taken effect. Well, we have a shorter way for you.

Click on Action on the Toolbar and select Reboot.

Note: This process will work seamlessly only if the machine on the other side doesn't have the Windows Log on with password enabled.

Take Remote Sessions like a Pro

Undoubtedly TeamViewer has simplified remote access and is compatible across multiple platforms. And is available for free. Plus, it allows for multiple remote sessions. Unless you're using it as part of a support program, remote assistance is not something that one needs on a daily basis. For me, it's usually reserved for helping my father with his somewhat ancient system.

What about you? How often do you have to use TeamViewer and which features do you tend to use often?
